Position: Principal Full Stack Engineer

Department: Walton Personal Philanthropy Group (WPPG)

Reporting to: Deputy Director of Operations

FLSA Status: Exempt or Non-Exempt
Location: Bentonville, AR

Walton Enterprises is seeking a seasoned, hands-on technical leader to serve as Principal Full Stack Engineer. This role combines architectural leadership with direct ownership of application development, database design and management, cloud infrastructure, and DevOps execution.

This individual will operate as the technical cornerstone for business-critical systems – combining complex environments, stabilizing and modernizing applications, and ensuring scalable, secure, and resilient technical solutions. This position requires a leader who actively architects, builds, refactors, and sustains systems end-to-end.

Please note: We are unable to sponsor employment visas for this position, including OPT and CPT authorizations.

About the Position

The Principal Full Stack Engineer will hold end-to-end accountability for the stability, performance, and integrity of WPPG’s business-critical systems. This role is responsible for establishing architectural clarity, strengthening engineering discipline, and ensuring that applications and data platforms are secure, maintainable, and built to last.

This individual will assume full technical ownership of existing and future systems – assessing risk, addressing technical debt, and implementing improvements that enhance reliability and auditability without disrupting operations. Success in this role is measured not only by what is built, but by the reliability, trustworthiness, and durability of the systems delivered.

What you will do

The Principal Full Stack Engineer leads full lifecycle delivery across application, data, and infrastructure layers while reinforcing engineering standards and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

Own Full-Stack Systems End to End

  • Design, build, and sustain full-stack applications across UI, API, database, and infrastructure layers using Blazor and .NET.
  • Assume ownership of existing systems, quickly assessing architecture, business purpose, and risk while leading thoughtful modernization and refactoring efforts.
  • Integrate custom-built solutions with off-the-shelf platforms, balancing innovation with operational sustainability and business continuity.
  • Lead full lifecycle delivery from requirements through deployment and ongoing production support.
  • Perform code audits, architecture reviews, and security assessments to proactively identify and address technical debt, vulnerabilities, and performance bottlenecks.

Lead Architecture and Technical Decision-Making

  • Define end-to-end architecture across application, data, and infrastructure layers aligned with scalability, maintainability, and long-term sustainability.
  • Evaluate internal capacity and architectural readiness to design, build, and sustain in-house solutions, articulating tradeoffs, risks, and strategic recommendations to inform disciplined build-versus-buy decisions aligned with long-term operational ownership and risk tolerance.
  • Balance timelines and constraints with sound engineering judgment.

Design and Steward Data & Reporting Solutions

  • Architect and optimize Azure SQL and MS SQL Server databases, including schema design, indexing strategies, and performance tuning to ensure reliable data platforms.
  • Establish strong data governance, security controls, and integrity standards across systems.
  • Design and support SSRS reports and PowerBI dashboards aligned with business and financial reporting needs.
  • Partner with stakeholders to deliver accurate, auditable, and trusted data solutions.

Execute Cloud & DevOps Strategy

  • Architect and manage Azure cloud environments supporting applications, data, and networking services.
  • Design, implement, and maintain Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines, automating build, test, and deployment workflows to ensure repeatable releases.
  • Enforce DevSecOps best practices, including secrets management, role-based access control, and compliance standards.
  • Apply infrastructure-as-code and modern deployment models, including containerization where appropriate.

Partner with Stakeholders and Provide Technical Leadership

  • Serve as the senior technical authority for WPPG systems, translating complex or evolving business requirements into well-architected solutions.
  • Collaborate with program teams, accounting, IT, and cross-functional partners to ensure operational alignment.
  • Communicate architectural decisions, tradeoffs, and long-term implications to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Manage 1 or more direct reports
  • Reinforce engineering best practices through structured code reviews and structured documentation practices.
  • Select and manage external contractors or technical vendors as needed, establishing a clear scope of work, architectural guardrails, performance expectations, and quality standards.

Who we are looking for

A disciplined technical leader who operates with strong ownership and sound judgment — elevating engineering standards through example and taking full responsibility for system outcomes. You must be a self-directed, mature professional who leads with integrity, remains steady under pressure, and consistently delivers on commitments with professionalism and resolve.

Skills needed

  • Full stack application development and end to end system ownership
  • Architecture design across application, data, and cloud environments
  • Cloud engineering within Microsoft Azure
  • DevOps and CI CD pipeline management
  • Database design and performance optimization
  • Security and DevSecOps practices

Qualifications required for your success

  • 15+ years of progressive software engineering experience with demonstrated full-stack ownership across frontend, backend, database, and cloud infrastructure layers.
  • 3+ years of experience leading technical teams or individuals and managing staff, external contractors, or vendors.
  • Deep expertise in .NET (#C) and Blazor, including component architecture, state management, and API integration patterns.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with the Microsoft Azure ecosystem, including application hosting, data services, networking, identity management, and secure cloud architecture.
  • Proven leadership of modern DevOps practices using Azure DevOps, including CI/CD pipeline design, release automation, and full lifecycle delivery management.
  • Advanced SQL proficiency, including database architecture, performance optimization, stored procedures, and security hardening across Azure SQL and SQL Server environments.
  • Demonstrated implementation of DevSecOps standards, including OWASP-aligned practices, role-based access control, secrets management, and secure pipeline integration.
  • Experience designing and deploying containerized workloads using Docker and Azure-native container platforms.

Personal attributes that support your success

  • Demonstrates discretion, integrity, and expertise while serving as a trusted advisor to principals and colleagues.
  • Collaborates respectfully and effectively with others, contributing to a supportive, team-oriented environment.
  • Approaches challenges with curiosity, bold thinking, and a commitment to continuous learning and innovation.
  • Maintains a strong focus on results, consistently exercising sound judgment and decision-making.
  • Brings a visionary mindset, planning strategically for the future with imagination and insight.
  • Committed to excellence and actively engages with others to accomplish shared goals.
