About the Role

Total Wine & More is seeking a Lead Accountant, Tax & Family Office to join our Finance team in our Bethesda, MD office. This role will support the company's expanding income tax and family office functions, providing essential income tax compliance and reporting services to the company and its shareholders. The key responsibilities for this position include preparing income tax returns and related workpapers for S-corporations and partnership entities, high-net-worth individuals, trusts, and private foundations, and family-owned entities, as well as responding to tax notices, and maintaining accurate accounting books and records. This role will also assist in researching complex tax matters, providing documentation, analysis, and insights that enhance compliance, drive efficiency, and support continuous improvement within the tax function. This role reports to the Director, Tax.

You will

  • Prepare and review federal, state, and local income tax returns and supporting workpapers for the companyโ€™s partnership and S corporation entities. Maintain tax records and supporting documentation in accordance with company policies.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of tax workpapers and tax returns for the individual shareholders and related family entities, including high-net-worth individuals, trusts, private foundations, and special purpose entities. Prepare quarterly tax projections and cash flow reports for family members and related entities.
  • Research complex tax issues and propose solutions to minimize risk and optimize tax efficiency. Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations affecting the company and its shareholders. Assist with special projects, including entity structuring, transaction analysis, and estate planning initiatives.
  • Support the day-to-day aspects of the organizationโ€™s income tax and family office functions, including responding to tax notices, assisting with tax audits, and providing as-needed tax research assistance to the broader department and organization
  • Prepare personal financial statements, cash flow analyses, budgets, and ad hoc reports to support decision-making and financial planning. Perform additional tasks and projects as assigned, contributing to the broader goals of the department.
  • Identify opportunities and implement enhancements in tax processes, systems, and data management to improve efficiency, accuracy, and operational effectiveness.

You will come with

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field required.
  • 3-6 years of income tax experience in public accounting, tax department or a single or multi-family office.
  • Strong foundation of federal, state, and local income tax concepts as applicable to S-corporations and partnership entities, individuals, trusts, and private foundations.
  • Familiarity with tax laws and regulations related to family offices.
  • Experience with CCH Axcess or other tax compliance software.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Maintain the highest level of integrity, handling sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with other team members, external advisors, and family members.
  • Advanced technological proficiency, including expert Microsoft Excel skills
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Preferred.
